Brooke Priory has a long tradition of music making and pupils have a great many opportunities to extend their individual repertoires.  Over 70% of children in the Prep enjoy individual lessons, with specialist peripatetic teachers, on a wide variety of instruments and voice.  Their examination results are impressive and by the time they reach Form VI a coveted music scholarship may be within reach.

On Tuesdays the focus throughout the school is music and the walls ring out with harmonies and rhythms.  From the parent and toddler group, Carried Along with Music and Song, to the Senior Choir there is something for everyone.

One of the joys of music is working collaboratively with others to produce a fantastic sound and we have a variety of groups for musicians of all levels.  Players initially join Music Magic and learn the rudiments of concentration, timing and following a conductor.  Many children form duets, quartets and octets depending on the balance of instruments that are being studied at the time.  However, the ultimate aim is to gain a place in the school's highly accomplished Ensemble.

Performance is, of course, the pinnacle and we celebrate the children's renderings at every possible opportunity.  Our annual Musical Evening, in the Summer Term, is a wonderful forum for us to enjoy their musicality and often younger members of the audience are inspired by what they see.  We also like to share the gift of music with others and perform at venues in our local community; the Harvest Festival at Brooke Church, the Likoma Link concert at the Oakham Methodist Church and an afternoon at the Rutland Care Village, to name but a few.

Class music gives every child a solid foundation from which to build.  To see the awe in the eyes of Year I when they hold their own tiny, blue, pink or purple violin for the first time is magical.  Recorders and ocarinas are also introduced at an early stage and help to develop notation.

Singing is a pleasure we all share, from rhymes in the Nursery to spine-tingling solos.  We have a Junior Choir for younger pupils and a Senior Choir for those in Forms IV to VI.  In 2011, for the first time, we joined with schools from around the country at the Young Voices Concert at the LG Arena Birmingham and we often enjoy collaborations with other schools.

Music comes from the heart and always raises a smile.
